Soften the look with a lace doily, quilt square or vintage place mat over the top.
Carved pedestals are available at many home decorating shops, and could be used as a small side table on their own, or topped with a circle of glass for a larger table surface. An antique, Asian, rustic or silver tray placed on a small stand or footstool would make an excellent alternative side table.
