Alternative Ideas for Side Tables

If you are in need of a side table but don't have a lot of money to spend, or are simply not happy with any of the choices you've seen, there are alternatives to design a side table that will not only serve its purpose, it will bring you comments and compliments from visitors. Look around your home, the local thrift store, garden center or your garage with an open mind and you might find many items that can make a perfect side table.
  1. Repurposed Furniture

    • A wooden chair can be used as a side table.

Furniture can be repurposed into a new life as a side table. A wooden chair is a quick solution, and perfect for holding your book or cup of tea. Use as is, or paint and distress for shabby-chic flair. A small cabinet or desk not only makes a nice side table, but also has drawers for convenient storage. Even a small filing cabinet can be painted to match your room and pressed into service as a table.

    Old Trunks or Suitcases

    • Old trunks make great side tables and provide storage.

Use an antique trunk as a side table. You can often find these at secondhand shops, and not only can they be used as interesting tables, you can store out-of-season clothing, linens or other bulky items inside. Scour yard sales, thrift stores and your grandparent's attic for antique suitcases that can be stacked and used for a side table and storage -- great for a country or eclectic look.

    Pots and Boxes

    • Place a circle of glass on top of a flower pot and use as a table.

An attractive, large flower pot makes an interesting and unique side table. Just set a pre-cut glass circle on top. Look for flower pots with glazed, colorful designs, Majolica or Mexican pottery or decorative metal or wood. For a quick and simple solution, paint a wooden crate or box to match your room and set on its side to act as a table. Soften the look with a lace doily, quilt square or vintage place mat over the top.

    Pedestals and Trays

    • Polish a silver tray, place it on a small stand and use as a side table.

Carved pedestals are available at many home decorating shops, and could be used as a small side table on their own, or topped with a circle of glass for a larger table surface. A wrought-iron plant stand could be used the same way. Look for black or aged looking metal with ornate designs. An antique, Asian, rustic or silver tray placed on a small stand or footstool would make an excellent alternative side table.
