Removing Scratches From a Tempered Glass Table

Buffing out scratches on a tempered glass table is possible if the scratches are fine and not deep. The scratches often occur by tossing key chains or other hard objects on the surface, or placing dishes with rough bottoms on the surface. Tempered glass is useful on coffee and end tables, dining tables, bookcases and other areas where you want the transparency and shine of glass. This type of glass crumbles up into pebbles rather than shards when broken, thus making it safer for home use. Although it's tougher than other types of glass, scratches may still occur.

Instructions

  1. Toothpaste Method

    • 1

Clean the tempered glass table with a glass or window cleaner and a soft, lint-free cloth.

    • 2

Spread toothpaste -- the non-gel variety -- over the scratch on the tempered glass.

    • 3

Wait for the toothpaste to dry, then buff it off with the cleaning cloth, using a circular motion.

    Homemade Polish

    • 4

Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda and 1 or 2 teaspoons of lemon juice in a small bowl. This creates a non-abrasive polish that's effective in removing scratches from the tempered glass.

    • 5

Stir the polish with a spoon until it forms a thick paste. Add additional lemon juice if necessary.

    • 6

Rub the polish on the scratch with a cleaning cloth.

    • 7

Buff the scratch in a circular motion with a clean corner of the cloth.

    • 8

Rinse the area with a cleaning cloth dampened with water. It may be necessary to repeat this method a few times to remove the scratch.
