DIY Laundry Table From a Door

New and old doors are large enough to make a roomy table for sorting and folding laundry, and you can paint or finish them in many different ways. A sheet of shatter-resistant, clear acrylic on top helps prevent the wood from snagging clothes, and it evens out the indentations of ornate panel doors. Measure the door, and ask the retailer to cut the acrylic to those dimensions. Remove the door hardware, and clean the door thoroughly. Narrow base cabinets fashion a sturdy foundation with storage, but any strong table legs will suffice.

Instructions

  1. Seal

    • 1

Set the door on two sawhorses outside. If you work inside, stand the sawhorses on a drop cloth.

    • 2

Brush a coat of clear sealer on the door with a wide, fine-bristle paintbrush. Let the first application dry, then apply another coat.

    • 3

Turn the door over once the first side is dry. Apply sealer to the bare side and along the edges of the door, and let it dry. Apply another coat, and let the door dry for 24 hours.

    Solid Painted Finish

    • 4

Paint any recessed or trim areas with latex enamel paint using a narrow, angled trim paintbrush.

    • 5

Fill a paint pan with more paint, and roll a foam paint roller through the pan to load it with paint.

    • 6

Roll the paint roller over the wide, flat areas of the door slowly to prevent bubbles.

    • 7

Let the door dry, and apply another coat of paint. Let the door dry 24 hours, turn it over and paint the back side.

    Dry-Brush Distressed Finish

    • 8

Dip a wide paintbrush in a can of white or off-white paint. Scrape off the excess on the rim of the can, and blot the brush on a rag or newspaper until it is barely damp.

    • 9

Drag the paintbrush over the door in short quick strokes. Immediately wipe the paint lightly with a wadded, dry rag to blend the brush strokes.

    • 10

Add more brush strokes on the door wherever you like until the look is pleasing. Some wood or old paint should show through.

    Crackle Finish

    • 11

Paint the top or right side of the door with the color you want to peek through the cracks in the crackle glaze. Dark brown or black paint as a base coat enhances cracks in light-colored crackle glaze. Conversely, light colors are more noticeable through cracks in a dark glaze.

    • 12

Paint the door again, using crackle-finish paint, and let it dry.

    • 13

Brush on crackle glaze beginning at one end of the door and working toward the opposite end. You cannot correct brush strokes or brush over the glaze once you have applied it, so work evenly and without stopping until the door is covered. Brushing over the glaze with smear and ruin the effect. Cracks will appear through the top coat shortly after you apply the crackle glaze.

    • 14

Let the door dry for at least 24 hours.

    Set Up

    • 15

Set the door on the floor where the laundry table will go. Trace the outline of the door onto the floor lightly with a pencil. Remove the door.

    • 16

Place the base cabinets at the far left and right inside the outline.

    • 17

Apply silicone sealer or construction adhesive around the top of the cabinets.

    • 18

Set the door on the cabinets while the adhesive is still sticky.

    • 19

Apply a narrow bead, or line of clear silicone around the perimeter of the top of the door.

    • 20

Set the acrylic sheet on top of the door, and press it down to stick to the silicone. Ask a helper to assist with lifting and placement of the sheet to get the alignment straight the first time. Adjusting it will smear the silicone.

    • 21

Let the table dry 48 hours before using it.
