How to Remove Acetone From a Wood Table

Acetone is sometimes recommended to remove unwanted finish or paint on your wood table. But too much of a good thing can lead to stains and discoloration in the wood. Similar to other alcohol- and chemical-based liquid stains, an acetone spill on wood discolors the wood and lightens the finish. Fast action on your part can minimize the damage, making the stain easier to remove. You can remove an acetone stain on your wood table with supplies that are effective yet safe for wood.

  • 1 teaspoon cigar or cigarette ash

Instructions

Ash-based paste helps draw out acetone, heat and water stains.

Place 1 teaspoon of cigar or cigarette ash and 3/4 teaspoon of lemon juice in a bowl. Stir the two ingredients together with a spoon to make a stain removing paste for your wood table.

    • 2

Dip a clean cotton cloth into the ash paste. Rub the paste into the acetone stain on your wood table. Move your cloth with the grain of the wood. Allow the paste to remain on the surface of your wood table for one minute.

    • 3

Wipe the paste off the wood table surface with a damp cloth. Dry the wood with another cloth. Rub a pea-sized amount of furniture wax polish into the wood. Buff off excess polish with a dry cloth.

    • 4

Treat acetone stains that have soaked into the wood with a polish made from 1 teaspoon of powdered rottenstone and 1 teaspoon of lemon oil. Stir the two ingredients together to make a soft paste.

    • 5

Apply the rottenstone paste to the wood table surface with a dry cloth. Rub the paste into the wood for two to three minutes.

    • 6

Remove the paste by wiping the table with a dry cloth. Apply wood polish to protect and moisturize the wood.
