How to Make Lightweight Detachable Table Legs

Tables with legs that can be removed are much easier to move and store than tables with the legs permanently attached. If you move a lot, or need to put your furniture in storage for long periods of time, it's definitely worth having a table with detachable legs. Though tables that are made with mortise and tenon construction can be very strong, they can't be taken apart and take up loads of space when they have to be stored.

Instructions

    • 1

Construct lightweight table legs out of pine, spruce or other softwoods. These woods are much lighter than most hardwoods, but will still make legs that are strong enough to support any table.

    • 2

Taper the legs by using a table saw to cut them so that their bottoms are 3/4 inches narrower than their tops. This will make the legs more elegant looking and will also reduce their weight.

    • 3

Lay the table upside down on the floor and position the legs between the ends of the aprons on the underside of the table. Put a pencil through the two holes that are in the corner block that holds the aprons together and mark the inside face of the table leg.

    • 4

Drill holes into the table leg where you put the marks. To assemble the legs to the table, put lag bolts through the corner blocks and into the table legs and tighten them with a socket set. To remove the legs, take out the lag bolts.
