How to Fix a Formica Table That Turned Black From the Sun

Formica is a brand-name laminate that is easily found on many surfaces around the home. It is fairly durable, but changes color or fades if it gets a lot of sun. This cannot be undone. However, you can fix the table so it suits your decor by painting it with durable paint. Laminate does not accept paint easily because of its slick surface, but with the right products, you can have a coat of paint that is usable in days and lasts for years.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the tabletop with 120-grit sandpaper until the surface is no longer shiny. Wipe with a tack cloth to remove the sanding dust.

    • 2

Mix the two-part, water-based epoxy paint according to the package instructions. Prepare the paint right before you plan to use it. Epoxy paint requires an induction period of 30 minutes before you can use it.

    • 3

Paint the table's surface, using a short-napped sponge roller or a synthetic bristle brush. Coat the entire table and let it cure according to the package instructions -- up to two days. Apply a second coat for the best durability.
