Homemade Tables With Polyurethane

Homemade tables can save money while giving you the chance to show off your own art designs and use materials you may have laying around the house. Polyurethane is a type of varnish that coats surfaces with a transparent and waterproof layer, which can protect against mildew while also giving your table a new look. As a resin, it can help encase different types of art on your table.
  1. Primary Table Surface

    • Choose your main table surface first. For example, use an old table you want to remodel or enough lumber for a table project. Polyurethane is generally made to be applied onto a wood surface, so use a level wood material.

    Polyurethane for Objects

    • One of the options you have when designing your own table is the ability to decorate it. This is where a polyurethane layer can come in handy. Because of its plastic origins, polyurethane works very well as a coating over encased objects already held in epoxy or other materials. When picking out your art materials, choose something flat, like pictures, photographs or bottle caps. This allows you to create your own design and protect it.

    Polyurethane Coatings

    • If you are making a table that already has an ideal surface, such as a wood grain that looks picturesque, you may not want to cover it with art at all. Polyurethane can help with this project, too. You can choose to cover it with a basic clear polyurethane coating for more protection. This allows you to use the table as a play area, eating station and activity bench without worrying about damaging it.

    Applying Polyurethane

    • Polyurethane is a plastic-based varnish, so wear a mask, use proper ventilation and wear protective clothing when applying it. Start by applying a thin coat with a normal or foam brush, and brush with the grain. Wait at least a day for it to dry, then sand it lightly and see if you need a second coat. Several coats may be needed for lighter varnishes.
