My Factory-Finish Dining Table Is Peeling

Dining tables feature protective finishes that guard against damage from spills, heat and sharp objects moving across the surface. Whether your dining table is made of wood with a protective finish, veneer or a synthetic composite, peeling in the factory finish can create an eyesore that is difficult to repair without completely refinishing the table's surface.
  1. Reasons

    • A dining table's factory-applied finish may peel for a number of reasons. Spilling a chemical such as paint thinner or wood stripper on the table will damage even the most durable finish. A defective finish is also prone to peeling. This can occur if the finish was improperly mixed, applied to wood that had oil residue on it or applied under extreme temperature and moisture conditions. Hot food items and spilled liquids should not cause the finish to peel unless it is defective.

    Problem

    • Once a dining table's factory finish begins to peel, the surface can be damaged more easily. As the peeling finish spreads, more bare wood is exposed. Moisture from spills or the steam from hot food will cause the exposed wood to swell. This creates an uneven dining table surface. When the finish peels away, the exposed wood is also prone to staining from spills and scoring from sharp or heavy objects.

    Repairs

    • Repairing peeling finish on a dining table is possible, though challenging. The first task involves removing all of the peeling or loose finish. Next, you must apply a new finish that produces an identical color and texture to help it blend into the original finish. If the finish elsewhere is dull from wear, a new, shiny finish won't blend in. Refinishing the entire dining table surface may be the only option.

    Pursuing Warranties

    • In some cases, you may be able to request a replacement table or professional repair through your dining table manufacturer's warranty. This is likely only an option if you are the original retail purchaser and the table is still within its limited warranty time frame. For example, warranty coverage may apply for only one year from the purchase date. If the damage is a result of mistreatment or a household accident, the warranty will likely not apply.
