Instructions

    • 1

Arrange two 40-inch, 2-by-4-inch boards parallel to each other on the working surface with their large sides facing down. Space them 17 inches apart. Place two 24-inch, 2-by-4-inch boards on top of them, perpendicular and overlapping in the corners. Adjust the four boards so they make a 24-by-40-inch rectangular frame.

    • 2

Drill three holes into each corner so the holes penetrate both boards but not through to the working surface. Set 2 1/2-inch wood screws in the holes and secure them in place with a screwdriver to create one of the workbench's leg supports. Repeat the process to create a second workbench leg support.

    • 3

Have an assistant hold the two leg supports upright on their smallest edges, parallel to each other with 21 inches between them. Lower a 3/4-by-24-by-36-inch plywood board on top of them so that it is evenly spaced. Drill six holes through the plywood board and into each of the leg supports. Attach the plywood board, which is the workbench top, to the leg supports with 2 1/2-inch wood screws.

    • 4

Position a 24-inch, 2-by-4-inch board behind each leg support, overlapping the leg support and workbench top by 4 inches and sticking upward above the workbench top by 20 inches. Make sure the largest side of the boards is flush with the leg support, and drill four holes through these boards, which are the rear boards, and into the legs supports. Attach the rear boards in place with 2 1/2-inch wood screws. Position a 1-inch metal L-bracket between the work surface and each rear board, and secure them in place with 1-inch wood screws.

    • 5

Set a 1/4-by-20-by-36-inch piece of pegboard against the rear boards, and drill four holes through the pegboard and into each rear board. Attach the pegboard to the rear board with 1-inch wood screws.

    • 6

Arrange a 3/4-by-24-by-40-inch plywood board against the outside of both leg supports. Attach the plywood to the sides with 2-inch wood screws spaced every 12 inches. Attach a 3/4-by-24-by-36-inch plywood board to the upper part of the rear of the leg supports using the same method.

    • 7

Set another 3/4-by-24-by-36-inch plywood board against the front of the leg supports, at the top of them, leaving a 4-inch space at the bottom of the leg supports. Position two side-mount cabinet hinges between this board, which is the door, and one of the legs supports. Mark the holes for the attachment screws, and drill the holes at each marking. Install the hinges to the door with 3/4-inch screws and the leg boards with 2 1/2-inch screws.

    • 8

Position a 3/4-by-21-by-24-inch plywood board between the leg supports, 4 inches from the ground. Set two 1-inch metal L-brackets below the board against each leg support board. Attach the brackets in place with 3/4-inch screws in the plywood board and 1-inch screws in the leg supports.
