DIY Table Top Planks

A wooden tabletop made out of planks is often used as a farmhouse table or picnic table. These tabletops give your kitchen or dining area a rustic and casual look. You can make your own tabletop planks out of any type of wood planks you get at a lumberyard or home improvement store. All you have to do is cut them to the proper length and sand them down until smooth.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase softwood planks, such as pine or cedar since they're easy to work with, from a lumberyard or home improvement store. Purchase as many planks of wood as you’ll need for the size tabletop you desire.

    • 2

Measure how long and how wide you want the tabletop to be. Use chalk to mark the areas you need to cut on each board.

    • 3

Put on the goggles. Cut the boards along the chalk line with the circular saw.

    • 4

Place the sandpaper on the sander and run it over each plank of wood in the direction of the grain until smooth. Be sure to sand the corners of the table well to round them off. This avoids a sharp edge that can cause injury later.
