How to Make Curved Table Legs Out of Plywood

Adding curved legs to a table is a basic method of adding an artistic flourish. Whether you are building a new table or replacing the legs on an old one, you can make curved legs out of plywood. These legs can be customized to any size and shape that you want with a bandsaw. A single sheet of plywood will yield many legs, allowing you to practice a few before making the final ones.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut strips of plywood with a bandsaw. They should each be as long as the desired table leg, and two inches thicker. You want as many as needed to create a block two inches thicker than the finished leg.

    • 2

Brush wood glue onto the surfaces of the plywood, and clamp the plywood strips together into a solid block.

    • 3

Wipe of any excess wood glue with a paper towel. Allow the glue to dry for the time recommended on the bottle.

    • 4

Sketch the front and side shapes of the table leg on the wood block with a pencil.

    • 5

Set the guard on a bandsaw slightly higher than the height of the block.

    • 6

Cut out the table leg using a bandsaw, which allows you to make curved cuts. You only need to cut two sides: one for the leg's front and back, and another for the right and left sides.

    • 7

Sand the table leg with 80-grit sandpaper. You can completely round the shape or just remove any rough edges as desired. Sand the leg again with 120-grit sandpaper to refine the surface and then again with 180-grit and 250-grit until you reach the desired level of smoothness.

Paint or stain the table leg as desired.
