How to Level a Pedestal Base Table

A wobbly table is unpleasant to use. As the table ages, parts loosen, which can make it unstable, at other times the problem may be an uneven floor, or a combination of the two. Fixing a table with a central pedestal base so it feels secure and rests level may require a few steps. The best place to start is by examining the table from the underside to see if it has lost or loose parts.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a blanket on the floor. Turn the table upside down on the blanket.

    • 2

Check all of the table fasteners. The top of the table may have a large number of screws and brackets, depending on the style of the top and whether it opens for extensions. Go around the top systematically and check each fastener. Replace lost or missing screws. If a screw is loose, use a thicker screw of the same length. Look along the pedestal as well since some are composed of several materials.

Locate the adjustable feet. Most pedestal-style tables have legs and feet that branch out from the center point to aide in the stability of the table. On the underside of the legs the table should have adjustable feet. If a foot is missing, collapsed or otherwise not functional, it is a good idea to replace all of the feet. The replacements are inexpensive and the will all be the same height.

Unscrew the old feet and install the new feet. Some new feet are self leveling and adjust on their own to uneven floors, other types are manually operated. Once the feet are secure, turn the table upright. Adjust the table by turning the feet clockwise and counter-clockwise. Check the level of the table by pushing against the edges to locate any wobble and by placing a level on the table and looking at the level bubble in the tool. You may need to readjust the table if you move it to another location.
