How to Make a Laminated Glass Table

Laminated glass is a type of safety glass that does not shatter when broken. Though not typically utilized in creating furniture, laminated glass can be used as a tabletop material for custom pieces. This material is ideal for use as a tabletop because, if it is broken, there will be no sharp, dangerous edges. To build a laminated glass table you simply need to construct a wooden table frame and install a laminated glass top.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a measuring tape to determine the ideal dimensions for your laminated glass table. Measure the length and width of the space where you intend to place your table or use an existing table as a template. The measurements you take will be the dimensions of your tabletop.

    • 2

Cut two pieces of two-by-four hardwood to a length 4 inches less than the measurement you determined in step 1, using a circular saw. These 4 inches will allow the tabletop to overhang the table frame by 2 inches on either end. Cut two more pieces of two-by-four hardwood to the width of the table, minus 8 inches. These 8 inches will allow for the 2-inch overhang on either side and account for the 2-inch thickness of the other two boards they will be fitted between.

    • 3

Arrange the four pieces of hardwood in a rectangular shape, standing the boards upright on their longest narrow edges. Sandwich the shorter boards between the ends of the longer boards. Drive 3-inch wood screws through the longer boards into the thickness of the shorter ones to secure the frame.

    • 4

Use the circular saw to cut four 4-by-4-inch hardwood posts to the desired height of your table. Use an existing table as a reference in determining the height for your new table.

    • 5

Lay the rectangular hardwood frame flat on the ground and stand one of the 4-by-4-inch table legs upright in each of the interior corners. Two sides of each leg should be flush with the inside edges of the frame.

    • 6

Drive 3-inch wood screws through the hardwood frame into the table legs to secure them. For added stability, drive 3-inch wood screws through the inside edges of the legs into the interior of the wooden frame.

    • 7

Cut a sheet of 1/2-inch plywood to the length and width dimensions of the hardwood frame. Lay the plywood flat on top of the frame and secure it in place by driving nails from a nail gun down through the plywood into the frame along all four sides.

    • 8

Paint or stain your completed table frame to match the existing decor in your room. To make the plywood top of the table frame less noticeable beneath the glass, paint it white.

    • 9

Lay your sheet of laminated glass flat on the floor and flip the table frame upside down on top of it. Adjust the glass tabletop so that once the table is right side up, the glass will be centered over the frame, overhanging it by about two inches on all four sides.

    • 10

Pre-drill holes through the bottom of the plywood into the underside of the laminated glass tabletop using a masonry bit. Drill one hole in each corner of the tabletop. Insert masonry screws into the pre-drilled holes and tighten them by hand using a screwdriver to secure the tabletop. Have someone help you right the table once the tabletop has been attached.
