How to Bronze Paint a Metal Table

Add bronze paint to refinish a metal table that has been repurposed or to update the appearance to match your decor. This do-it-yourself project requires time to prepare the table, which includes sanding and priming the surface. You need to do this when working with the metal surface to prevent oxidation from ruining the table. Complete the work in a well-ventilated area and protect your skin from harsh chemicals. With a little effort and elbow grease, you will have a piece that will last for years to come.

Things You'll Need

  • Sandpaper
  • Soft cloth
  • Protective gloves
  • Metal surface primer
  • Bronze metallic spray paint

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the surface of dirt and remove any loose paint flakes.

    • 2

Sand the table surface with a medium-grade sandpaper. If the table is rusty, remove the rust using a brush, sandpaper or acidic solvent.

    • 3

Wipe the surface with a damp cloth to remove the dust from the sandpaper. Let dry.

    • 4

If the table is made of galvanized metal, clean the surface with lacquer thinner or solvent that is designed to remove the oil coating. Galvanized metal is metal plated with a thin coat of zinc. This coating helps prevent corrosion but must be removed to allow the new paint to adhere.

Apply the primer to the table. Choose the appropriate metal primer type based upon whether the table is rusty or has a clean surface. If the table is made of a ferrous metal (contains iron), it will rust. The primer inhibits corrosion. If you are not sure what type of metal the table is made of, test the surface with a magnet. If a magnet is attracted to the table, it is made of ferrous metal.

Spray the table with the bronze metallic paint. Let dry according to the manufacturer's directions. Apply a second coat, if necessary.
