How to Build a Half Round Coffee Table

A coffee table is often a desirable piece of furniture, even if the room is limited on space. When it comes to comfortably incorporating a coffee table into a tight spot, mobility tends to be the biggest issue. Consider creating a half-round coffee table to fill the space. With some quick templating and a steady hand for cutting, you can make a half-round coffee table for your space in a couple hours time.

Things You'll Need

  • Plywood, 1-inch thick, 36-inches long, by 18-inches wide
  • String, 20-inches long
  • Pencil
  • Thumbtack
  • Jigsaw
  • 220-grit sandpaper
  • Four 18-in balusters
  • Four baluster bases
  • Sixteen 1-inch screws
  • Drill
  • Phillips head drill bit
  • Tape measure

Instructions

    • 1

Place the 36-inch by 18-inch plywood on a flat surface. Position the plywood horizontally so it is running 36-inches from left to right. Measure and mark the center location across the bottom edge of the plywood.

    • 2

Tie one end of the 20-inch string around the thumbtack. Tie the opposite end of the string around the pencil. Stick the thumbtack into the center mark location and twirl the string around the pencil until there is 18-inches of string remaining between the tack and the pencil.

    • 3

Position the pencil in the bottom left corner of the plywood. Pull the string tight and draw a half-circle template across to the bottom right corner. Remove thumbtack from the plywood.

    • 4

Cut along the half-circle template using the jigsaw. Avoid cutting too fast as this can cause you to cut off the lines. Sand the cut edges with the 220-grit sandpaper to remove any rough edges.

    • 5

Place plywood on a flat surface so the flat edge is at the bottom, closest to you. Position one baluster base in each corner. Attach the base to the table by driving one 1-inch screen into each base corner, for a total of four on each base.

    • 6

Measure over 6-inches from each inner edge on the attached bases. Measure up 12-inches from each 6-inch mark. Position one balusters base at each 12-inch measured location.

    • 7

Attach the baluster bases at these locations by driving one 1-inch screw through each corner for a total of four screws per base.

    • 8

Screw each baluster onto the bases and turn table over. Position flat edge against the wall or a solid surface.
