Simple DIY Painting Ideas for a Moroccan Style Octagon Table

Bronze

• Many Moroccan tables are made of metal. To capture this look, lightly sand the table and spray paint it bronze metallic. Add several coats. Allow the paint to dry, then tape off a border around the edge of the table. Tape a geometric design down the vertical legs. Paint the border and outside of the designs an espresso brown color. This simple two-tone paint treatment looks elegant and simple.

Hand Made Patterns

• To make your table look like it has the patterns and colors common to Morocco, base paint the table in the color you want to be most prominent. Generally, this is a light tan, black or bronze. After the paint dries, find the center of the table top. Use a plastic template and draw a circle. Use a paint pen to fill in the circle with the color. Use two or three templates. Add shapes around the original circle. Evenly space each shape and fill them in as you go. It helps to look at reference patterns for ideas.

Stencil

• Go through the stencil patterns at a craft store. Use stencil paints or paint pens. Tape the stencils to the table and pounce your paint through the openings. You may build up the colors or mix your paints and pens to make lines more distinct. Add stenciling to the sides of the legs. Finish by coating some areas in sizing. Add bronze or copper leaf over the sizing to bring a metal finish to the sized areas.

Painter's Tape

• To create a pattern directly on the table, base coat the table. Tape off a 1-inch border around the edges. Measure along each side of the tape and make evenly spaced marks. Use 1/4-inch painter's tape to tape across the table from mark to mark. After you have created the design you like, spray paint the patterned area. Use a paint color that contrasts with the base coat. When the paint dries peel the tape. Finish with a clear coat.
