How to Add Taller Legs to a Coffee Table

Repurposing old furniture saves money and allows you to reuse items that would otherwise end up languishing by the curb. You can fit a short coffee table with longer legs to create a small kitchen, game or console table, vanity or free-standing kitchen island or countertop. Find replacement legs or spindles at your local home improvement store. Varieties with dowel screws already attached to the end simplify the installation process.

Things You'll Need

  • Jigsaw or handsaw
  • Electric drill
  • Drill bit
  • 1 1/2-inch-long dowel screws
  • Dowel screwdriver bit
  • Replacement legs or chair spindles of the same diameter

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew or cut the legs off the table with a jigsaw or handsaw. Make the cuts as close to the table top as possible.

    • 2

Fit an electric drill with a drill bit one size smaller in diameter than the dowel screw and drill pilot holes in the center of each cut mark on the underside of the table. Drill pilot holes in the center of the top of each replacement leg.

    • 3

Fit an electric drill with a dowel screwdriver bit and drill the screws into the replacement leg pilot holes.

    • 4

Screw the legs into the table pilot holes by hand.
