How to Make a Skirted Table With a Garbage Can Base

Whether you need it for a craft fair or conference, or as a design element in your home, a skirted table is a perfect way to add decor while providing a convenient spot to stash items you would prefer to hide from view. You can make a skirted table very inexpensively starting with a garbage can as a base. Select a can that is the right height for your desired table and made of metal to prevent it from easily tipping over. You can also use the can as extra storage for items not frequently used.

Things You'll Need

  • Metal garbage can
  • Plywood top
  • Tablecloth or fabric circle
  • Glass top

Instructions

    • 1

Discard the lid, and wash the garbage can with a soapy rag. Rinse well.

    • 2

Set a round, plywood top on the trash can, and center it so it will not wobble. You can find precut plywood circles in various sizes at home improvement centers or lumber yards.

    • 3

Cover the plywood with a tablecloth or fabric piece long enough to fully drape to the floor on every side. You can determine the size needed by measuring the width of the plywood board, and adding that number to the distance from the floor to the plywood board doubled. For example, if your plywood board is 24 inches across and the distance to the floor is 36, you will need a circle of fabric that is 96 inches across.

    • 4

Layer a second fabric over the first, if desired, arranging the fabric to drape and show the fabric underneath.

    • 5

Set a circle of glass over the fabric, so the glass is centered on the plywood board underneath.
