How to Make Table Top Mosaics With Broken Tiles

By breaking your tiles, you can create custom mosaic table tops. Before purchasing and breaking any tiles, plan your design carefully with a full-sized color drawing of the finished work. Choose a design that includes fairly large spaces of color. A random pattern of broken tile pieces can also work if you are confident in your design ability. You can find leftover and sample tiles for your mosaic at tile supply stores. Broken dishes can also be included in the mosaic.

Things You'll Need

  • Craft paper
  • Crayons
  • Tiles
  • Cardboard pizza box
  • Goggles
  • Cotton gloves
  • Hammer
  • Epoxy glue
  • Ceramic tile grout
  • Plastic bowl
  • Craft stick
  • Sea sponge
  • Spray grout sealant

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the actual size perimeter of the table top on the craft paper. Draw your design in crayons to follow as a template.

    • 2

Place one or two tiles in the pizza box and close the lid of the box. Put on the goggles and cotton gloves and bang the box with the hammer to break the tiles. Repeat to break all tile pieces.

    • 3

Mix the epoxy glue according to the manufacturer’s directions. Glue the large pieces of broken tile in the design area to the table with the epoxy glue. Fill in the design areas with the smaller pieces of broken tile. Let the glue dry for 24 hours.

    • 4

Mix the ceramic tile grout in the plastic bowl according to the manufacturer’s directions. Spread the grout over the tiles, filling in all spaces, using the craft stick.

    • 5

Dampen the sea sponge with water and wipe off any excess grout from the tiles. Let the grout dry for 24 hours.

    • 6

Spray the grout sealant over the entire mosaic table top. Let the sealant dry for 24 hours.
