How to Replace Tempered Glass for a Table

Tempered glass for a table is made to resist breakage, however, if hit in just the right way, it can shatter into thousands of tiny pieces. Tempered glass is made by cutting a piece of regular glass into the desired size and shape, then treating it with heat in a process that makes it four to five times stronger. The size and shape cannot be modified after it completes the tempering process. Tempered glass for a table can be custom ordered or selected from standard sizes and shapes.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil and paper
  • Table shape pattern

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the table frame for the tempered glass or measure the glass itself, if it is not broken. If it has broken, estimate the measurements and check with local or online glass companies to ascertain if there is a standard size close to your estimated size.

    • 2

Measure or estimate the thickness of the glass, which is usually less than 1 inch.

    • 3

Look at the edge or check what options are available to figure out what type of edge finish is required for the replacement. A simple, seamed edge is sufficient if the glass is placed in a frame, while a rounded edge is safer if there are young children in the house and the glass table top is not framed.

    • 4

Draw or sketch a pattern for a tempered glass table that has an odd shape, such as rounded corners, or an octagonal, oval or circular shape.

    • 5

Note the color of the glass, some tempered glass is tinted in shades of gray or bronze.

    • 6

Contact a local or online glass company that carries tempered glass to order the replacement glass for your table.
