Storage cubes come in a variety of styles, sizes and materials; some may even contain drawers. Creating a table or desk using storage cubes requires little more than the cubes themselves and a flat surface to use for the top. Experiment with materials you may have around the home or garage before setting out to purchase a tabletop.
Measure the area where you'd like to place your table or desk. Based on that measurement, calculate the height, width and depth you desire for the table or desk that will fit the space. Write down the measurements.
Look for storage cubes based on the type of table or desk you're building, your measurements and your personal taste. Check the cubes' dimensions to find those suitable for the height and depth of the table or desk. If you find cubes you like that are too short, you may be able to stack one on top of the other, depending on their style and whether you're flexible as to the table or desk height. Look at storage cube systems as well for use with a taller desk.
Assemble your chosen storage cubes according to the manufacturer's instructions. Paint or cover the cubes in contact paper if desired or leave them as they are.
Choose a table or desk top. Purchase a piece of plywood that fits the table or desk dimensions. For a cheap, eco-friendly table, use an old door or window pane, a framed mirror or a salvaged tabletop.
Sand, paint and finish the tabletop, as necessary. Let it dry completely.
Place the storage cubes on the edges of your measured space to act as the desk legs. Be sure the units are parallel.
Set the tabletop onto the storage cubes. If the tabletop is wood, drill heavy-duty screws from the underside of the top cubes into the tabletop to hold it in place.
