How to Get Scratches out of a Marble Tabletop

Scratches occur on marble tabletops when an object harder than stone is dragged, dropped or pulled across the surface of the tabletop. Luckily, the marble used on tabletops is a solid slab of material, which means you can remove a thin layer of the tabletop without creating noticeable damage to the area surrounding the scratch. Using the correct method of scratch removal will allow you to restore the look of the marble so you once again have a beautiful tabletop.

Things You'll Need

  • Clean sponge
  • Soapy water
  • Rags
  • Clean water
  • 180-grit wet/dry sandpaper
  • 300-grit wet/dry sandpaper
  • 400-grit wet/dry sandpaper
  • Marble polish
  • 600-grit wet/dry sandpaper
  • Buffing pad

Instructions

    • 1

Dip a clean sponge in soapy water. Ring out the sponge. Scrub the entire surface of the marble tabletop. Wipe down the tabletop with a rag. Rinse the surface with clean water.

    • 2

Drop a piece of 180-grit sandpaper into clean water. Allow the sandpaper to remain in the water for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove the 180-grit sandpaper from the water, and soak a piece of 300-grit sandpaper in the water. Repeat with a piece of 400-grit sandpaper.

    • 3

Sand the scratched area of the marble with the wet 180-grit sandpaper until the scratch disappears. Discard the used sandpaper.

    • 4

Sand the entire surface of the marble tabletop with the wet 300-grit sandpaper. Repeat the sanding process with a soaked piece of 400-grit sandpaper. Clean the tabletop with a clean, wet rag. Dry the marble thoroughly.

    • 5

Apply a liberal amount of marble polish to the dry surface. Polish the marble tabletop vigorously with a dry piece of 600-grit sandpaper. Remove the haze left by the marble polish with a clean rag.

    • 6

Apply another liberal amount of polish to the marble tabletop. Run a buffing pad over the tabletop, using small, circular strokes until the marble has an even, high-gloss shine.
