About Lawn Swings

Move over hammock, as one of the most relaxing and enjoyable pieces of outdoor furniture is coming back strong, with the return of the lawn swing. While it was a staple in many American homes some 200 years ago, it lost some ground until its current resurgence. The lawn swing even has some advantages over the hammock, since people can sit upright to read, knit or converse and, most importantly, a lawn swing is often built for two individuals.
  1. Time Frame

    • Lawn swings were a staple in the 1800s, when many folks lived in large, sprawling farmhouses that often included immense front porches. Although the porch lost its popularity, the lawn swing continued to be a staple in outdoor furniture. With more people moving towards enjoying the great outdoors, even if the enjoyment has moved to the backyard instead of the front, lawn swings once again have become a popular item on which folks can sit back and relax.

    Types

    • Lawn swings come in several different types. Some are freestanding, with their own frame, and can be placed anywhere in the yard. Others rely on tree branches, overhead beams or another types of frame to which the swing is attached. Others may be part of a larger structure, such as a gazebo. Most lawn swings feature a large chair or bench suspended with rope or chains from the swing structure to its overhead support. One more type is the double-lawn swing, which features frame topped with a canopy over two swings facing each other.

    Features

    • Like the double-lawn swing, some of the frames may have an awning or canopy on top. Swings can be made of a variety of materials, ranging from wood to plastic to canvas with a metal frame. Many will seat at least two people, although smaller models and youth swings are also available. The colors and styles are endless. Bare or solid colored wood is on one end of the spectrum, while floral canvas and zany designs are on the other.

    Effects

    • The lawn swing can add a dash of fancy to any yard, complimenting the overall look. A rustic, natural cedar swing may work well to add a woodsy feel to a log house or country cabin. Sleek, modern-covered swings in a black fabric and a stainless steel frame can add some deco décor to a poolside or jacuzzi. Colorful, floral swings delightfully attached to a tree can offer a cozy haven in a blooming garden. Regardless of the style, the major message a lawn swing is getting across is that the homeowner likes to relax and enjoy life.

    Misconceptions

    • As durable and solid as long swings may appear, they are not meant for recreation, rough housing or swinging contests. The swings are constructed to gently sway back and forth, not take a beating or reach heights as intense as an amusement park ride. Some of the freestanding swings are not anchored into the ground and can be easily tipped over if abused. One safeguard is to create cement anchors in which the swing can be permanently secured, but that should not be a free ticket to use the swing as something other than its low-impact, gentle function.
