How to Paint an Old Metal Lawn Chair

Over time lawn furniture has a tendency to lose the appeal it once had when it was new. Outside where it is constantly exposed to the elements, nature takes its toll. If you're looking to change and improve the look of a lawn chair rather than replacing it all together, this is an easy, cost-effective way to breathe new life into your patio. With the right materials your old metal lawn chair will look like new.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the lawn chair thoroughly by wiping it with a clean damp cloth. Apply liquid TSP to a clean cloth and wipe the chair thoroughly. Allow the chair to dry completely.

    • 2

Spread newspaper across the floor. It is best to do this project outside to avoid making a mess.

    • 3

Cover any areas that you do not want painted with masking tape.

    • 4

Set the chair on the newspaper and spray the chair with spray paint primer. Apply a thin coat and allow it to dry completely before applying the next one. Apply five to 10 thin coats of primer. Thinner coats will help to prevent drip spots later.

    • 5

Spray the chair with a coat of spray paint for metal. Allow the first coat to dry before applying the next one. Keep applying one coat at a time until the desired look is reached.
