How to Make Outdoor Pillow Covers from Vinyl Tablecloths

Summer means outdoor living and plenty of relaxation on hammocks and patio furniture. But, cloth or canvas pillows have to be brought indoors each night or they get damp and mildewed. Use a vinyl tablecloth to make pillow covers for a low-maintenance solution to the problem. Also consider making covers for your outdoor furniture's seat cushions, if they are already not waterproof. Look for thinner vinyl because it will be easier to sew.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a measuring tape on the pillow itself and measure from one end to another. This allows for any roundness that would not get measured if the tape were held straight across.

    • 2

Add a 1/2-inch seam allowance to each edge of the pillow measurements. For example, if the pillow measurement is 12 by 12 inches, the new measurement is 13 by 13 inches.

    • 3

Mark the measurements for the front and back pieces on the vinyl tablecloth with a small pen mark. Make the markings on the wrong side of the cloth and use a pencil.

    • 4

Cut the front and back pieces to the measurements from the vinyl, using scissors.

    • 5

Put the vinyl right sides together, lining up all four corners. Put the pieces into the sewing machine. Sew a straight stitch, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance, starting 1 inch before a corner. Sew all the way around, until you are 1 inch past the fourth corner. Remove the fabric from the machine.

    • 6

Turn the pillow cover right side out and push out all the corner with your fingers.

    • 7

Insert the pillow form through the gap in the fourth side.

    • 8

Ensure the 1/2-inch seam allowance on the fourth side is folded under. Squish the pillow form back from the edge of the fabric a bit and put the pillow back in the machine, just capturing both edges of the fourth side of the pillow cover. Sew a straight seam close to the edge to finish. Trim off any loose threads.
