How to Waterproof Fabric For Outdoors

Outdoor fabrics tend to be thicker and more durable than those made for indoor use. They're designed to withstand the elements, but are not waterproof unless treated with a waterproofing formula. Not only will waterproofing spray repel water, it will also repel oil and stains and reduce fading. After applying waterproofing spray, most substances wipe right off. Waterproofing extends the life of outdoor fabrics; try it on chairs, cushions, pillows and awnings.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash or clean and dry the fabric. Look for an outdoor fabric cleanser that can be dabbed or sprayed on and wiped off or, if possible, remove and machine wash the fabric. Lay the fabric out to dry fully.

    • 2

Apply a waterproofing spray appropriate for outdoor projects to each section of fabric. Cover all areas that are not being sprayed to prevent moisture from seeping into untreated sections of the fabric.

    • 3

Allow the product to dry in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors in dry weather.

    • 4

Wipe the waterproofed fabric clean with a damp rag when soiled.

    • 5

Reapply seasonally as necessary to maintain a waterproof finish.
