Draw the design of your table top on a piece of paper or purchase a design from a hardware store. Transfer the design to the wood table with a pencil.
Spread a thin layer of thinset mortar or other tile adhesive on a small section of the wood table, beginning in the center for a circular table or at one edge for a square or rectangular table. Press the tiles into the adhesive. If necessary, you can remove the edges of the tiles with tile cutters. Continue this process until the wood table top is covered by tiles. Allow the thinset or adhesive to dry for a minimum of 24 hours.
Apply grout between the tiles once the thinset has dried so that there are no spaces between them. If desired, colored dyes can be mixed into the grout for a custom effect. Allow grout to set for no more than thirty minutes.
Using a solution of water and mild detergent, wipe the table top with a sponge to remove excess grout and any dust or dirt left behind. After applying moisture, allow the grout to dry for at least 72 hours.
Apply a sealant specifically made for tile to the top of the table to protect the tile and provide a smooth surface that is easy to clean. Allow the sealant to dry thoroughly, usually about 3 to 4 hours, before using the table.
