How to Paint Plastic Lawn Chairs

Instead of replacing weathered plastic lawn or deck furniture, many prefer to fix it up and gain years of additional use. Repainting plastic lawn and deck chairs is a relatively easy task that requires little in the way of preparation and materials. There's even spray paint available at many home improvement and department stores specifically designed for such a task.

Instructions

Determine how many chairs you plan to paint and the colors you want. Typically, one can of paint will cover the average sized chair with two coats, so you may have to purchase several cans if you're painting a set or sets of chairs. Popular name brands like Krylon and Rust-Oleum offer many different colors that are formulated to withstand inclement weather and sun exposure. Cans usually retail for less than $5 per can (in 2009).

Lay newspapers over the floor of your flat work surface in a well lit and well ventilated area. A garage is ideal as long as the paint fumes can escape. Painting outdoors is fine, but the wind may interrupt the paint drying process and blow particles onto the freshly painted surface.

Inspect the chairs for nicks or cuts that can be sanded out. Wash the chair(s) with a non-abrasive soap (common dish liquid is the common choice). Be sure to wash the entire chair (under the seat, the legs, etc.) to remove debris and dirt. Rinse away suds with clean water and allow the chair or chairs to dry.

Spray the first coat by holding the can's nozzle 6 to 8 inches away from the chair's surface. Spray top to bottom in even passes to prevent the paint from running. Give the first coat an hour to dry. Paint the chair(s) once more with a second coat if desired and allow to dry for an additional hour. Once the chairs have dried, they are ready to use.
