How to Replace a Glass Tabletop on an Outdoor Table

Glass tabletops provide a medium that is easily cleaned and resistant to the elements. When one breaks, there are a variety of options for replacement depending on the resources that are available. For a change, the replacement could be made out of wood or a mosaic, though both of these require special tools and skills. The simplest option is to order a new glass tabletop.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the size of the table, including the thickness of the glass. If necessary, trace the exact shape and size on a piece of pattern paper that can be provided to the glass shop for an exact fit. Remember to include any holes that are in the table for a shade umbrella or other accessories.

Consider the shape and finish you would like for the table. There are a variety of options such as oval, rectangle, rounded corners, angled corners, frosted glass, rippled glass, pencil edge and many others. Standard sizes and shapes will be less expensive than irregular shapes.

Contact a number of glass shops to compare the options and prices they offer for the table you want, as well as delivery and installation.

Install the table top onto the frame or base using safety glasses and gloves. Handle the glass with care; it can be heavy and unwieldy and any bumps can cause it to break or weaken the temper, making it more likely to break in the future.
