Can I Paint White Wicker Brown?

If the traditional white wicker does not match your décor, or you just need a change of pace, painting your wicker brown can provide a dramatic and elegant difference. It is possible to paint your wicker brown or any other color you desire as long as you properly prepare and paint it.
  1. Cleaning the Wicker

    • Properly preparing your wicker to paint helps ensure that the new coat of brown paint will fully adhere. Use a scrub brush to thoroughly wash the wicker. Combine 1 tbsp. of washing soda with 1 qt. of water to create your own cleaning solution. Also, purchase a liquid deglosser to completely prep the surface for painting. Allow the wicker to thoroughly dry before painting.

    Painting the Wicker

    • Changing the color of your wicker to brown could be disastrous if the previous paint is not compatible with your new brown paint. Incompatible paints result in the old paint cracking underneath or the new color not setting as desired. Use paint designed for wicker. Also, use a primer to limit any incompatibilities of the paints.

Test the paint in an inconspicuous spot first. When you are satisfied with the shade of brown, evenly spray all surfaces with the paint. Spray from different angles to make sure all parts are covered. At the same time, avoid letting too much paint accumulate in the crevices as it causes the paint to run and dry slowly. Finally, allow your new brown wicker to completely dry before use.
