What Cushion Do I Use for Outdoor Cushions?

Several important factors must go into your choice for an outdoor cushion. You will need to consider the weather in your region, what type of material suits you best and how you plan to use your furniture.
  1. Function

    • An outdoor cushion must function in two ways. First, it must be comfortable to sit on and use throughout its lifetime. Second, it must be resistant to weather conditions.

    Materials

    • For an outdoor cushion, materials play a key role in both the comfort and utility of the product. Search for a product that has been tested in the environment you will be using it in, be that extreme sun, rain or other weather. Water resistant materials, such as vinyl, are often chosen. Synthetic foams that are resistant to molding are also advisable.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Even with the correct outdoor cushion, proper care is essential for longevity. Wash your outdoor cushions monthly, or when needed, according the the manufacturer's instructions. During an extended period of disuse, bring them inside for storage.

    Size

    • As you shop, keep the dimensions of your furniture handy. Many pieces of outdoor furniture have larger than standard cushion sizes; the right fit will ensure your comfort.

    Warning

    • If you decide to leave cushions outdoors overnight, or in all types of weather, always buy an outdoor-rated cushion. Indoor cushions are not designed to withstand moisture and can harbor dangerous mold if left outdoors.
