How to Prevent a Metal Table From Rusting

Metal furniture can be susceptible to rusting, especially if it is exposed to water or moist air. There are several ways to prevent rusting, such as keeping furniture dry by covering it during wet weather, waxing or greasing it. Another option is rust-resistant latex paint, which will seal out moisture, preventing rust on outdoor furniture.

Instructions

    • 1

Bring table outside. Rub sandpaper in a circular motion over any existing rust or rough spots on the table. Most of the time, the paint container will advise on what size sandpaper grit to use.

    • 2

Put on paint clothes and safety mask.

    • 3

Apply primer to the metal table using a paintbrush. This step is important because the primer provides an extra seal against moisture, which causes rusting. Follow the primer directions on the can as to how long to wait until it dries. This usually takes about a day. Make sure to save some primer for a top coat, if desired.

    • 4

Use sandpaper to smooth any remaining rough spots after the primer is dry.

    • 5

Apply rust-resistant paint with a paintbrush. Make sure the paint covers the surface evenly. Follow directions on the paint can as to how long to wait until paint is dry.

Apply primer as a top coat. (Optional)
