Do You Season a Copper Fire Pit?

Buying a copper fire pit can be a great investment. Copper fire pits are durable and offer a eye-appealing addition to your backyard patio. The seasoning of a copper fire is a natural process that occurs as you use it, and it can be done with the first few uses
  1. Copper Fire Pits

    • Copper fire pits are great conductors of heat and have a higher melting point than cast iron, so you can burn charcoal or wood in them. If you use your copper fire pit on a wood deck, place it on a cement grill pad.

Most fire pits are made from top to bottom, making the bottom thin and leading to increased wear and eventual replacement. Copper fire pits are built from the bottom up, making the bottom of the fire pit thick where it gets hottest.

Copper fire pits come in smooth or hammered copper in various sizes. Copper fire pits cost more than traditional metal fire pits but also will last several years longer.

Seasoning your copper fire pit is optional. You can season by running vegetable oil around the inside perimeter and heating it to 350 degrees, or you can use the copper fire pit as is. You can season every three to four uses, but be sure to clean in between each use, removing all debris and wiping the pit clean.

You will start to see a buildup of a blue-green patina, which is the natural oxidation of the burning charcoal or wood. Patina is a natural protectant that will lead to a longer life for your fire pit. You can clean your copper fire pit with a soft cloth and mild soap after each use. Do not use harsh cleaners or scrubbers because they will dig and scratch the pit's surface.
