Difference Between Wicker & Cane

Wicker

• "Wicker" refers to the type of weaving that we often find on patio furniture. Wicker furniture is typically made of cane, rattan, banana leaf and other natural materials.

Cane

• "Cane" and "rattan" are often used interchangeably to refer to the same material. However, cane is actually the outer layer of bark on the rattan plant and is revealed after the thorny exterior layer of the rattan is removed. Once harvested from the rattan palm, the cane is processed into different sized strips that are then woven into furniture, baskets and more.

Features

• Structurally, cane can attribute its strength to a solid core. It is also very pliable when steamed, making it ideal for many uses.

Consideration

• Cane is naturally glossy, so it is difficult to paint or stain.

History

• Wicker furniture became very popular in England during the Victorian era and gained in popularity in the United States in the early 1900s.
