How to Repair Poly Resin Finished Furniture

Poly resin finished furniture is furniture coated with a layer of poly resin. Poly resin is extremely durable, making it popular for use with outdoor furniture. Poly resin is shiny, and gives furniture the appearance of glass. Various primary colors can be mixed into poly resin and then molded onto furniture during the manufacturing process to protect furniture. Poly resin makes furniture waterproof, so it's ideal for use on outdoor furniture.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread a tarp down around the furniture, to protect the floor. Or, place the furniture on top of the tarp. Take the furniture outside, weather permitting. Properly ventilate if inside by opening windows. Put on a chemical fume protective mask if you're using an all-purpose cleaning spray to clean the poly resin finished furniture.

    • 2

Put on plastic disposable gloves, and place a generous amount of orange oil onto a soft white cloth. Take the orange oil on the cloth and wipe over the bigger sections of furniture to remove large stains and surface grime. Poly resin furniture has a high gloss, and you should never clean it with abrasive substances like cleanser or steel wool pads. Keep the surface of poly resin furniture shiny by using the oil as a cleaning agent.

    • 3

Place a small amount of orange oil into a cup and swirl a small paintbrush in the oil, enough to saturate the bristles. Clean the crevices of the furniture with the brush. Wipe up any excess oil with a clean rag, going over the surface rigorously to absorb any excess oil.

    • 4

Examine the resin furniture for breaks or splits in the poly resin coating. Take putty epoxy filler and prepare the cracks or splits. Knead putty epoxy together until the putty is warm, and apply in-between any large gaps or splits to fill in. Scrape away any excess putty with a putty knife. Allow the epoxy to cure. Epoxy putty is waterproof, and will protect furniture from the wet elements, such as rain, sleet and snow. Allow the epoxy to cure overnight before painting.

Put on a chemical mask and disposable gloves, to protect your skin, and if inside, ventilate. Spray paint the furniture. You can use eco-friendly spray paint or a poly resin bonding paint in the color of your choice. Wait for the furniture to dry, and apply a second coat, if needed.
