How to Measure Furniture Covers

Measuring is necessary when purchasing new or replacement slipcovers, or covers to protect outdoor furniture from the weather if it is kept out year-round. The general measurements for both indoor and outdoor furniture include measuring the height, length, width and slope of the piece.

  1. Chairs/Sofas

    • 1

Measure a chair's height from the back side of the chair, starting from the ground up. Hold a tape measure on the floor, and pull it up tight against the back of the chair to the top. High-back chairs measure 35 inches and up. Any measurement under 35 inches is considered a low-back chair. Write down all the measurements as you go.

    • 2

Find the length by measuring from the back to the front of the chair, just past the arms. Measure the width by placing the end of the tape measure at the outside front of one arm and pulling the tape across to the outside of the opposite arm.

    • 3

Measure the slope of a chair by measuring the distance from the ground to the arm in the front, and the distance from the ground to the top in back. Once you have all measurements, you can get the appropriate-sized covers at a furniture supply store or online.

    Outdoor urniture

    • 4

Measure outdoor patio furniture sets by pushing all the chairs around an outdoor table neatly to the table in their proper place. Outdoor furniture protectors cover an entire set against the elements. Individual pieces, such as chairs and tables, can also be measured and covered separately.

    • 5

Measure from the back of one chair across the table to the back of the opposing chair. Unless the table is round, measure the width next. Measure from the ground to the top of the back of a chair to obtain the height of the cover. These measurements are for covers that protect the set.

Measure each chair and the patio table separately for individual covers. Start on the bottom and measure up for each chair, then across the front of the chair for the width. Do the same for the table; ground up, and across the width of the table.
