Remove the lid and grills from the mini barbecue. Scrub the grills with a wire scraper brush. A wire scraper brush has wire bristles on one end and a scraper on the other end. Scrub and scrape hard to remove the stubborn grime. The first part of this step applies to those making a fire bowl from a used mini barbecue but either way, new or used, clean the outside of the barbecue with a simple cleaning solution made of 1 tablespoon of dish soap and a bucket of water. Scrub the outside of the barbecue with a rag to make it shine. Set all the pieces to dry on a clean, dry towel.
Drill holes throughout the lid and fire bowl of the mini barbecue; separate each hole 1 inch apart for design sake. The fire will be visible through these holes and project circles on the surroundings at night. Make sure you do not drill through the handle brackets. Use different sized drill bits to mix things up.
Start a fire inside the fire bowl of the mini barbecue, then set the cooking grill in its proper position over the flame and spread a light layer of lava rocks, just enough to give a nice presentation without suffocating the fire, over the grill. Make sure there are gaps in the display of the lava rocks so the fire can rise through the rocks for added visual appeal.
