How to Build a Pool Towel Valet

A pool towel valet, or rack, must be waterproof and stout to stand up to water, chemicals and constant usage. A pool towel valet should also have four or more arms to hold wet towels and a sturdy base to keep it upright when towels are pulled off. A suitable material for this is PVC pipe because it is a durable plastic that is readily available and inexpensive. A do-it-yourselfer can make a good pool towel rack in one afternoon.

Things You'll Need

  • 8 lengths of PVC pipe, 2 inches diameter, 2 feet long
  • Sandpaper
  • Tack cloth
  • 1 PVC five-way connector
  • 8 PVC endcaps
  • 1 PVC pipe, 2 inches diameter, 4 feet long
  • 1 PVC cross connector

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the cut ends of the PVC pipes to remove any rough edges or burrs. Wipe with tack cloth to remove any dust.

    • 2

Place two-foot lengths of PVC pipe into the four holes of a five-way connector that lie on the same plane. The pipes should form an X shape with the fifth hole of the connector perpendicular to the X.

    • 3

Place an endcap on each of the free ends of the four pipes that form the X. Now you have the base of the towel valet.

    • 4

Place the base on the ground so that the empty hole of the connector points upward. Insert a four-foot length of PVC pipe into the empty hole. The four-foot section of pipe forms the stem of the towel rack.

    • 5

Place a cross connector on top of the four-foot pipe. There should be an empty hole of the cross connector pointing up and two holes pointing in opposite directions perpendicular to the four-foot section of pipe.

    • 6

Insert a two-foot length of PVC pipe into each of the holes of the cross connector that point sideways. Place an endcap on the end of each of these pipes. Now you have the bottom level of towel rack arms.

    • 7

Insert a one-foot length of PVC pipe into the last hole of the cross connector, making the towel valet one foot taller. Place a three-way connector on top of this section of pipe, making sure two of the openings point sideways from the stem of the towel valet. Also make sure the two side openings of the connector are perpendicular to those of the cross connector.

    • 8

Insert a two-foot length of PVC pipe into the side openings of the three-way connector and place endcaps on these two pipes. This forms the upper level of towel rack arms. Now you have a towel valet that has four arms pointing in four directions ready for use.
