How to Make Weather Proof Covers for Lawn Furniture

Lawn furniture is subjected to harsh weather on a continual basis, especially if left outside year-round. If not protected, lawn furniture can become damaged and unattractive. Lawn furniture is also prone to mold, mildew and insect infestation if not properly covered. Inexpensive home-made covers can protect lawn furniture and keep it in good condition for years to come.

Instructions

  1. Vinyl Table Cloth Lawn Furniture Covers

    • 1

Measure all pieces of lawn furniture with a tape measure. Write down the measurements onto a piece of paper. Make sure to measure the length, width, height and circumference of furniture. Measure the height of lawn chairs by placing the tape measure on the ground and stretching it up the back of the chair to the top. Measure the circumference of tables by going around the top flat part of the table with the tape measure. Measure the length of a sofa by placing the tape measure on the outside of the left arm and pulling across to the outside of the right arm. Measure width of sofas and chairs by measuring from the back part of the chair to the front edge of the seat or cushion.

    • 2

Go to a discount store where vinyl tablecloths are sold in bulk. Look on the front of the package to obtain a size closest to your measurements. Buy larger sized tablecloths as opposed to smaller sized tablecloths. Any left over tablecloth material can be used for future repairs.

    • 3

Clear a work space and open up the vinyl tablecloths. Work with the vinyl side up. The soft underside will come in contact with and protect the furniture surface. Trace the measurements for each piece with a number two pencil and a ruler. Cut out the furniture pattern on the vinyl with fabric scissors. For smaller furniture, use two tablecloths. On larger pieces, three or more may be required.

    • 4

Sew the vinyl cover patterns together on a sewing machine. Reinforce the seam while sewing. Store leftover vinyl in a sewing box for patch jobs.

Plastic Shower Curtain Lawn Furniture Covers

    • 5

Purchase plastic shower curtains in bulk from a discount or dollar store. Shower curtains are easy to use for furniture covers because they are long and moisture repellent. They are also easier to sew by hand, so a sewing machine may not be necessary.

    • 6

Open the shower curtains and spread them out on the floor in a cleared space. Using the measurements you have obtained for your furniture, sew the shower curtains by hand using a larger size needle and strong thread.

    • 7

Make a tight stitch that is durable enough to hold the curtains together and to keep moisture out. Use the shower curtains as extra protection over the vinyl tablecloth covers as well.

Tarp and Plastic Sheeting Lawn Furniture Covers

    • 8

Purchase tarps and use these for the largest pieces of lawn furniture, such as tables. A tarp will protect against the harshest of weather elements. Sew tarps together by hand according to your measurements obtained for your furniture.

    • 9

Wrap furniture with plastic sheeting. Unroll a roll of plastic, and begin at the bottom of furniture. Wrap in a circular motion, working your way up. Make sure every part of the furniture is covered while layering.

    • 10

Re-wrap furniture that will not be used year-round with any excess plastic left over. This will protect uncovered lawn furniture even better. Cut off any remaining plastic and sew the top tightly closed by hand.
