Calculate the amount of fabric needed by measuring the dimensions of the chair seat. Add 1 inch for seam allowance and multiply the total dimension by two for the top and bottom of the pad. Use this calculation to determine the fabric needed for one chair pad.
Draw the seat dimensions onto a brown paper bag. Place the pattern onto the chair to verify it is the correct size and mark the location of the backrest polls. Add 1/2 inch around the entire pattern for seam allowances and cut out the pattern.
Place the pattern onto the fabric and cut two pieces for each chair pad. Cut four pieces of fabric that measure 2 inches by 10 inches for the ties. Cut one piece of thick polyester batting for each chair pad using the chair pad pattern.
Fold the ties in half so the right sides are together and the long sides match up. Sew across one short end and down the long end of each tie. Turn the ties right side out using the open end and press flat with an iron.
Lay one chair pad piece on a flat surface so the right side is facing up, and pin two ties at each location marked on the pattern for the backrest rolls. Place the cut polyester batting on a flat surface, place one chair pad piece on top with the right side facing up and place the second chair pad piece on it with the right side facing down.
Pin the three layers together, making sure the chair ties are tucked inside the layers so only the ends of the ties get sewn into the seam. Sew around the chair pad with a 1/2-inch seam starting at the front of the pad. Leave a 4-inch opening for turning the pad.
Turn the chair pad so the right sides are facing out and the batting is on the inside by pulling the fabric through the opening. Smooth the seams and verify that the ties are on the outside of the pad.
Hand-sew the 4-inch turn hole closed. Sew buttons into the middle of the chair pad to prevent the layers from shifting (optional).
