How to Paint Metal Lawn Furniture

The painted finish of metal lawn furniture eventually becomes worn over time due to constant exposure to the elements. Refresh your metal patio furniture with a thorough cleaning and a new coat of paint to leave it looking as good as new. Of course, you don't have to wait until the furniture shows wear to begin painting. Change the color of your metal lawn furniture to match a new decorating scheme or brighten it up for a summer party.

Instructions

    • 1

Scrub any rust or flaking paint on the metal lawn furniture with a stiff wire brush and soapy water.

    • 2

Rinse the metal lawn furniture with a garden hose and dry the furniture with a clean towel.

    • 3

Spray a layer of rust resistant metal primer on the clean lawn furniture. This will prevent rust and stop any existing rust from spreading.

    • 4

Apply a thin coat of spray paint in the chosen color to the metal lawn furniture. Allow the furniture to dry completely. Apply a second coat and let it dry. If needed, spray on a third coat and allow it to dry.

    • 5

Sand the dry metal lawn furniture with 200-grit wet/dry sandpaper and water. Keep the sandpaper and the lawn furniture wet while you work to achieve a smooth, shiny finish.

    • 6

Dry the metal lawn furniture with a clean towel after sanding.
