How to Repair a Sun Umbrella

Sun umbrellas are generally made of the same materials as regular umbrellas; the main difference is that sun umbrellas are generally larger and used to shield you from the sun. Sun umbrellas are used on the beach and on backyard decks and patios. They can last for many seasons if properly taken care of; however, rips and tears can still occur.

Instructions

  Sew small tears/rips with a needle and thread. Limit stitching to tears no more than four inches in length. Knot the thread before cutting it to keep the stitches in place. Look for heavy-duty thread if possible or double stitch the tear for extra protection against further rips.

  Use fabric glue on tears five inches and longer. Place glue on either side of the torn fabric and use your hands to push the fabric together so the fabric slightly overlaps. Put the umbrella on a flat surface so the glued tear can dry properly. Try placing a heavy object on top of the tear to help it stay together when drying. If you do not want glue on the heavy object, put a plastic bag over the tear beforehand.

  Apply patch kits to tears more than six inches long. Umbrella patch kits can be purchased at most retail stores. Patches are either stitched on ironed on.

  Remove any fraying along the edges of the umbrella with scissors. "Stitch along the new edge" according to the Long Fence University website to prevent future fraying.
