Prepare a metal patio table according to your needs. Remove rust, repaint and fix the table according to your needs. Ideally the table should be made for a glass top so this project is ideal for tables with broken tops or garage sale finds.
Place the pre-cut plywood on top of the table.
Draw a basic idea of your mosaic design on paper. This may not be the final look but it will help you choose your tiles and give you a general idea of where to place everything.
Buy tiles or use leftovers. If using leftovers, you will have to make do with what you have, unless you are willing to buy more. If buying, use discontinued tiles and those on sale. Mix different sizes in the same shade or similar sizes in different colors. You can even use broken pieces of tile.
Lay out your design on the plywood. Do not glue anything yet; take your time putting tiles together, seeing how colors and shapes look side by side. Try using the largest decorative tile as a centerpiece and putting smaller tiles around it, or you can lay tiles out willy nilly to create abstract shapes.
Cut tiles to fit in the edges as necessary or use broken pieces of tile.
Glue your discontinued tile mosaic to the board. Start at a corner and work your way around the edges toward the center, unless the center piece is the largest part. In that instance, glue the biggest tiles down first.
Fill in the cracks between the tiles with the glue and allow it to dry.
