For the past 150 years, rattan has been the main material used in quality wicker furniture. Rattan is a climbing palm vine; the most durable type is the rare honey rattan. Rattan grows in the rain-forest of several regions, like south and Central America and Southeast and East Asia.
Wicker furniture became popular during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The furniture graced homes in both England and America. This furniture was less expensive then the grand wooden furniture of the era, as well as lighter and more portable.
With proper care, wicker furniture is quite durable and can last 100 years or more. Wicker is weather-resistant. Just hose off the furniture and allow it to dry in the sun. If the grime is persistent, use a mild soap to clean the stains from it.
