How to Hang Outdoor Furniture

Outdoor furniture gives you the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors in comfort. One disadvantage to using outdoor furniture is water damage to the legs. The way to avoid damage to your wooden outdoor furniture is to hang it from the ceiling joists of your porch, like an old-fashioned porch swing. Using heavy chains and eye bolts to hang your outdoor furniture provides it with the proper support and keeps you safe from falls.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the legs off of the chair with your saw. Cut along the bottom of the bracing boards on the chair to retain the structural integrity of the chair.

    • 2

Drill a hole on either side of the back of the chair with your ½ inch bit. Drill a hole through the arm of each chair. Make all four holes 2 inches from the edge of the board that they pierce.

    • 3

Drill a hole through a roof joist in the location you have chosen for your hanging chair. Skip a joist and drill another hole in the next joist.

    • 4

Slide a 10-inch eye bolt through the holes in the joists. Place a washer on each side of the wood, and twist a bolt onto the end of each eye bolt. Tighten the nuts with the adjustable wrench. Slide a 4-inch eye bolt through each hole in the chair, and fasten them in the same manner.

    • 5

Slide the end of a chain through each eye bolt. Add an S hook to the end of each chain. Slide the free end of each S hook onto its own chain. Squeeze each end of every S hook with your pliers to secure the chains.

    • 6

Use an S hook to connect the front and back chains on one side of the chair. Connect the chains on the opposite side of the chair with another S hook.

    • 7

Lift the S hooks and connect one to each chain hanging from your roof joist chains. Shorten the chains to the desired height by cutting off the excess with your bolt cutters. Squeeze the S hooks closed with your pliers.
