How to Recover Patio Furniture Cushions

Patio furniture has sturdy frames but the cushions tend to wear out much more quickly. Sunlight and water break down the fibers in the coverings, causing them to fade or tear. Most outdoor fabrics are treated to prevent damage to the cushion inside, so total replacement isn't necessary and you can re-cover the old cushions instead. Re-covering the cushions also gives you a chance to update your furniture to a more updated fabric design.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the old covers from the cushions. Measure the length, width and height of each cushion.

    • 2

Add the height measurement to both the length and width measurement; then cut two pieces of fabric for each cushion to this measurement. For example, a 12-by-12 cushion that is 4 inches high requires two fabric pieces that measure 16-by-16 inches.

    • 3

Fold over ¼ inch of fabric along one side of each piece of fabric. Sew along the fold to hold it in place.

    • 4

Set the two pieces of fabric on top of each other, right sides facing and with the hemmed sides together on both pieces. Sew the three unhemmed sides together.

    • 5

Cut a length of hook-and-loop tape to the same length as the hemmed side of the cover. Pin the the hook side of the tape to the inside of one hemmed edge and the loop side of the tape to the outside of the other hemmed edge. Sew in place.

    • 6

Trim the excess fabric from the corners of the covers. Turn the cover right side out and push out the corners.

    • 7

Slide the cushion into the covering. Secure the cover closed with hook-and-loop tape.
