How to Heat an Outdoor Patio

If you have an outdoor patio attached to your home, it can be a great place to spend time with family and friends or to entertain visitors. However, an outdoor patio is a chilly place to commune in many areas of the U.S. during the late fall to early spring. If you would like to be able to use your outdoor patio during some of those cooler months, several devices are available that will allow you to heat your outdoor spaces.

Instructions

Get outdoor heaters for the patio. Choose from heaters powered by propane, heaters the use natural gas and electric heaters that require a power source. If you choose an electric heater, use an extension cord designed for outdoor use.

    • 2

Add an outdoor fireplace to your patio. Like indoor fireplaces, outdoor fireplaces provide heat through the burning of materials, usually wood, and add a decorative element to your patio.

    • 3

Opt for a chiminea in place of an outdoor fireplace. A chiminea differs from a standard fireplace in that wire mesh usually encloses it and it heats uniformly on all sides, whereas a fireplace is usually open on only one side.

Install an outdoor fire pit. While fireplaces and chimineas are upright, fire pits generally have the appearance of a large bowl. Place burning material in the middle of the bowl area. A protective mesh screen around the top of the bowl keeps the burning material from popping out.

Place torches around your patio. Torches contain oil and you light them by inserting a wick into the oil and lighting the wick like you'd light a candle. The torches continue to burn as long as there is oil inside the dome.
