How do I Build Simple Screened in Area on Pool Deck?

PVC pipe can be used to create a lightweight, durable, portable screening solution for any pool or patio area. These screens can be disassembled for storage or transport then reassembled for use in minutes. The size of the screened in area can be reduced or expanded at will, and the assembly will not suffer any damage from pool water or exposure to weather. In the unlikely event of structural damage, such as from high wind, the screen can be easily repaired with a replacement pipe piece.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • 2 two-foot pipe segments (per panel)
  • 2 height-size pipe segments (per panel)
  • 2 elbow connectors (per panel)
  • 2 three-way corner connectors (per panel)
  • 2 six-inch pipe segments (per panel)
  • Screen fabric
  • Snap clamps (At least 4 per panel)
  • PVC cement (optional)
  • Spray paint (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area to be screened. Divide the length of each side by two feet. The result indicates how many panels will be required for each side. Also, note the height of the screened area.

    • 2

Place an elbow connector on each end of a two foot PVC pipe section. The open end of both connectors should face the same direction.

    • 3

Insert a 'height' length piece of pipe in each connector opening.

    • 4

Place a three-way corner connector on the end of each 'height' length piece of pipe. Two of the connector openings should face each other, and the other should face the same direction. Connect the openings that face each other with a two foot segment of pipe. Place a six inch segment of pipe in the remaining opening to help balance the frame.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 2 through 4 steps to create enough frames for each side of the screened structure. Position the frames around the area to be screened.

    • 6

Swab a small amount of PVC pipe cement into each connector, after dry-fitting each frame to ensure accuracy. Add the PVC pipe cement before attaching the connector to the pipe. Glue each rectangular panel together but do not glue them to anything else. Leave the six inch pipes for balance and the fabric and the snap clamps unglued. This will allow for faster storage and assembly.

    • 7

Attach the fabric to the side of one of the frames, using PVC pipe snap clamps. Stretch the screen material around the outside of all of the frames, using PVC pipe snap clamps every two feet along the top and bottom of the frames, to secure the fabric in place. Make sure not to overlap the fabric. One frame must be left uncovered, for use as a doorway.

    • 8

Secure a two-foot by height-length piece of fabric over the doorway. Use snap clamps to secure the fabric on the top and partially down the sides, leaving the bottom un-secure. This will allow people to enter and exit, by pulling upward on the fabric.

    • 9

Attach another piece of fabric across the top of the assembled frames, securing the fabric with PVC pipe snap clamps, as well.
