How to Recycle Wood Pallets to Make a Chair

For very little out-of-pocket cost, you can build your own wooden pallet deck or patio chair. Many businesses give away used wooden pallets for free. Check your local classifieds listings or visit any local shops or businesses that deal with heavy shipments to see if they are disposing of any pallets. Turning these cast-off bits of scrap into sturdy chairs can be completed with only a small amount of tools and hardware.

Instructions

    • 1

Dismantle the pieces of the pallets either by prying them apart using the hammer or simply cutting the pieces apart. Pallets do not come apart easily, and it will probably be easier to saw them apart.

    • 2

Measure and cut two pieces of wood 18 inches long for the front legs of the chair. Measure and cut two pieces of wood 34- to 36-inches long for the back legs of the chair.

    • 3

Attach one back leg and one front leg together in the shape of a lowercase letter H. The seat should be at least 18 inches deep. Add a brace between the two legs a few inches from the bottom of the legs. Repeat for the other set of legs.

    • 4

Lay the two sides down with the long back legs on the work surface. Screw the back runner on the inside edge of the chair to attach the two sides. Screw on the front runner on the outside edge of the chair.

    • 5

Stand the chair upright to make the seat. Do this by lining up the slats over the front and back runners, then screwing into place.

    • 6

Add two slats on the back of the chair towards the top to form the backrest.

    • 7

Add additional braces at the lower end of the front and back legs. Install diagonal braces to each side running from the brace on the front leg toward the top of the back leg.
