DIY Chair Mats

Making your own chair mat out of fabric and polyester batting is a simple project that requires basic sewing skills. The mat is similar to a pillow and will give the chair seat extra cushioning. Use a durable cotton or cotton and polyester blend fabric to prevent early wear and tear of the mat. Fabric and sewing supplies for a do-it-yourself chair mat are available at most fabric or craft stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the chair seat to make a mat that fits into the chair. Increase each measurement by 1 inch for seam allowances.

    • 2

Sketch a pattern of the chair mat using the measurements. Include the extra 1 inch for seam allowances. Cut out the pattern and set it on the chair seat to make sure it fits properly.

    • 3

Pin the pattern to the desired fabric and cut out two pieces; for the top and bottom of the mat. Cut 1/2 inch off each side of the pattern and pin it to a piece of thick polyester batting or 3/4- to-1-inch foam padding.

    • 4

Place the two pieces of fabric on top of each other with the right sides together. Pin three sides and sew them closed with a 1/2-inch seam.

    • 5

Turn the mat covering so the right sides are out. Poke the corners with your finger so the mat is a square. Turn under the edge of the fabric open 1/2 inch and iron to hold it in place.

    • 6

Slide the polyester batting or foam padding through the opening and make sure it is smooth. Pin the two pieces of fabric together to hold in place and hand sew the opening closed. You can also machine sew the opening close to the outside edge.
